Eliot Merit Scholarship Program

The Eliot Merit Scholarship Program provides merit awards to a limited number of scholars entering grades 7 and 9 at MICDS. The recipients are students who demonstrate a superior level of academic achievement and future potential.  These are students who appear poised to make significant contributions to the MICDS community in and beyond the classroom.

The awards are named in honor of William Greenleaf Eliot, 19th century visionary and founder of Washington University in St. Louis, who also founded Mary Institute, one of the predecessor schools that ultimately became MICDS.  Eliot was an academic leader who was ahead of his time, and he left his mark on the educational landscape of St. Louis. In selecting Eliot Scholars, we seek students who embody similar qualities that lead us to anticipate great things from them in the future.

The Scholarship
A student named an Eliot Scholar receives an annual award in the amount of $5,000 to be applied toward the cost of tuition at MICDS. The scholarship is renewable annually as long as the student remains at MICDS and maintains strong academic and honorable standing.

The award is a merit scholarship and is not need-based. An Eliot Scholar may also receive need-based financial aid in addition to the scholarship if the student’s family qualifies for financial aid through the regular process. However, the total amount awarded to the student will not exceed full tuition.

The Eliot Merit Scholarships celebrate academic excellence at MICDS. It is a very selective process with a limited number of named scholars each year. The scholarship program will be open to both current MICDS students as well as students applying to attend MICDS.

The Eliot Merit Scholarship recognizes academic achievements.  It is not awarded for special artistic or athletic talents.

Nomination and Selection
Eliot Scholars at MICDS will be selected by the Admission Committee who will consider all applications individually. The awards are open to students who are nominated by others or who choose to self-apply. Candidates will need to complete all requirements for the award, including the completion of the Eliot Merit Scholarship test and writing sample, two years of report cards, and an official school transcript.

All nominees and their parents must participate in the Eliot Merit Scholarship Information Session on Saturday morning, January 21, 2012, starting at 8:30 a.m.  Students will take the Eliot Merit Scholarship test while parents view a special presentation.

Students selected to be Eliot Scholars will be expected to participate in program activities and will receive special recognition.
