MICDS believes a great education can change a life forever. We seek to teach and empower young men and women to accept new ideas; to help them learn and grow, academically and personally; and by doing so, inspire them to help make the world a better place for us all. The challenging and comprehensive Upper School, Grades 9-12, is based in the liberal arts and is designed to give young men and women the academic preparation necessary for success in college and beyond.  In addition to the strong core curriculum, students avail themselves of opportunities for AP and other ­college-level coursework, ­thought-provoking electives, and independent study. All classes are ­co-educational. Technology is an integral part of learning across the curriculum.

Our Faculty
The dedicated, well-educated and enthusiastic faculty serve as instructors, advisors, coaches and sponsors. As advisors, they meet with students throughout their Upper School years. Our advisory system allows teachers to get to know students well, enabling them to be an effective link in the Parent/School Partnership. The advisor works with the grade-level Dean and the student’s College Counselor to provide a four-year support team for each individual.

By the Numbers
The ratio of students to teachers in the Upper School is 8 to 1. Class size ranges from 10-18 students per classroom.

Advanced Placement Policies
Advanced Placement (AP) courses follow a syllabus developed by the College Board. Each May, AP tests in all academic disciplines are administered to students taking specially-designed Advanced Placement courses at MICDS.

Senior Projects
MICDS incorporates in its Mission Statement an emphasis on critical thinking, individual responsibility and an education that “prepares young people for higher learning and for lives of purpose and service.”

To that end, as a component of the graduation requirement, senior class students have the opportunity to use their talents and achievements in an educational, service or career-oriented Senior Project. Specific guidelines are provided, but the goal of the project is to have each student discover and engage the world around the School. The project, which takes place each May, is required of all seniors for graduation.

The School and Community Service Committee
Students can seek volunteer work in areas suitable for high school students. Projects can include working with such groups as Energy Care St. Louis, Haven of Grace, Our Lady’s Inn, Lafayette Industries, Habitat for Humanity, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, American Red Cross and hospice organizations, among others. All service learning seeks to help others and make our community a better place in which to live, and is based on our School’s mission of developing skills needed to live a life of purpose and service.

The Honor Council
This is an Upper School student-elected and student-run body charged with promoting honor at MICDS. It takes a proactive stance to educate the community about the place of honor at MICDS and in life.
