State Champions!

It was an incredible season for the MICDS Varsity Girls Lacrosse team who went 16-0 on the season, clinching the State Championship against Villa Duchesne 11-6. It was a true all-around team effort with a balanced offense of six players posting 30 or more points on the season. Sophomore goalie Kendall Curry ’23 was the backbone of the team’s defensive unit; she led the area in save percentages and an average of just four goals per game, including a shutout game against Eureka. Individual accomplishments were abundant with four players named First Team All-State: Livie Warren ’21, Ella Durrill ’21, Olivia Rickers ’22, and Curry. Warren and Durrill were awarded US Lacrosse All-Academic honors, and Warren was named a US Lacrosse All-American. All-Metro Conference honors were also plentiful. First Team honors went to Warren, Durrill, Rickers, Amber Petersen ’22, and Curry. Lauren Sugavanam ’21 and Greta Wolfsberger ’22 earned All-Metro Honorable Mentions.

State Champions!

The 2021 Rams Boys Lacrosse team capped off one of the most competitive seasons of Missouri lacrosse with a 10-6 win over De Smet to claim their 7th state championship in a row and 10th overall in program history. Paced by the finals MVP, Cam Curry ’21, and a physical defense led by senior captain, Will Kacmarek ’21, the Rams controlled the tempo for the majority of the game and celebrated wildly with their classmates as the final seconds ticked off the clock. Special shout-outs to Landon Gelven ’22 and Kacmarek for being selected US Lacrosse All-Americans. Other award winners were Grant Purdy ’21, Academic All-American, PJ Behan ’22, All-State, and Curry, All-State. The Rams were led all year by senior captains Crawford Bundy ’21, Joe Nicpon ’21, Kacmarek, and junior captain, Behan.

Success as a team and standout results for Erb, Jan

The Boys Tennis team had a successful season this year as a team and individually, with standout results from multiple players. Early in the season, the Rams defeated Class 1 State Runner-up Westminster 6-3. In the Tournament of Champions, the Rams took third place, tying with Class 1 State Champion Barstow. During the postseason, the Rams enjoyed a successful run to the District Finals by defeating Lafayette 5-0 before succumbing to Marquette with a 0-5 loss. Evan Erb ’21 and Justin Jan ’22 reached the finals, with Erb winning in a tight three-set match in the individual Districts tournament. Aryan Motwani ’21 and Ryan Jasper ’21 finished in third place in the doubles competition with a win over the top seed from Lafayette.

Erb and Jan represented the Rams in singles at the individual State Championships, making it to the semi-finals. Jan went on to take third place in singles. In the finals, Erb played an incredible match to win the second State Championship of his career, with the first being in Class 1 as a freshman. Erb has the distinction of being the first State Champion in Class 3 with this win. He also earned the Metro League Player of the Year honors and was named the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Player of the Year for Boys Tennis.

Second at State with several Individual State Champions

The MICDS Boys Track & Field team finished this season with a high-water mark at State. The Rams finished in 2nd place, just one point behind winner Eldorado Springs. The day started well for the Rams as Shawn Putman ’21 outclassed the field in the long jump with a winning leap of 22-4-1/4. The 4x400m Relay team of Aaron Hendricks ’21, Tony Nunn ’22, Novo Onovwerosuoke ’22, and Winston Moore ’23 were also State Champions, winning the event in 3:28.53. Onovwerosuoke was also the 3rd place finisher in the 200m dash with a personal best of 22.43. The 4x200m relay team of Harrison Brown ’22, Nunn, Onowerosuoke, and Moore lowered their own school record several times this season to a time of 1:29.77 and were able to finish 2nd at the State Championship. Nunn finished 4th in the 400m dash with 50.85, his fastest time of the year. Moore was able to reach the State finals in the 100m dash. The 4x199m relay team of Nate Smith ’21, Onowerosuoke, Steven Hall ’23, and Moore received All-State Honors. Senior Captain Raphy Sowah ’21 qualified for the State Finals. The Boys team finished 2nd in the Class 3 District Championship and Second in the State Championship team awards.

Metro League and Class 5 District Champions

The MICDS Girls Track & Field team had many highlights throughout the season. Julia Ray ’23 landed State runner-up in the 3200m run and broke her own school record several times. Ray also set school records in the 1600m run and finished 6th in the State Championship. Maya Anderson ’23 was the District and Sectional Champion at both the 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles. Anderson finished second in each event at State and lowered her school record to an impressive 14.02 in the 100m and a 44.54 in the 300m hurdles, the second-fastest in school history. Senior Captain Alexis Bellamy ’21 also made the State final in the 100m hurdles, finishing 4th. Zoe Carter-Konate ’22 and Ellie Gira ’22 earned All-State Honors. Amani Hendricks ’22 made it to the State Championship in the long jump. The 4x400m Relay team of Annalisa Goot ’21, Gira, Kate Oliver ’22, and Anderson ran an outstanding race. The MICDS girls ended the season with a Metro League Championship and an MSHSAA Class 5 District Championship to keep a string of 13 wins in a row intact. The 6th place team finish at the State Championship was something to build on for next season.

Seniors lead through a strong season; Mikula takes 1st at Districts

The Boys 2021 Golf season got off to a strong start with a victory in our first league match against Westminster and a solid showing in the Metro League Championship tournament. The boys fought through the regular season and had good outings from senior golfers Cal Barton ’21, Justin Goldenberg ’21, and Sam Liu ’21. Will Petersen ’23 had a breakout season and looks to continue his growth into next season. The standout for the season was senior Henry Mikula ’21. Mikula capped off his stellar high school career with a 2nd place finish at the Metro League Tournament, medalist honors in six league matches, 1st place in the District Championship, a T7 finish at Class 5 State Championship, and All-Metro League Team. With the departure of several seniors, we look to rebuild for next season thanks to our returning players, JV, and incoming freshman class.

Baseball

Michael Kraatz

A good run at the Class 5 District Championship

The 2021 baseball season was more successful than the record might indicate. The Rams finished the season with a 14-13 mark. Though a winning record, one win over .500 does not show the number of hard-fought and well-played losses the club endured to larger, reputable opponents. The 2021 team played a good brand of baseball, having ended the season for two opponents on its way to a Class 5 district championship game, where our team ultimately suffered a season-ending loss. With the state adopting a six-class format for the first time, the 2021 Rams were tasked with competing in a Class 5 playoff for the first time in school history. No challenge was too great for this team, led by a group of seniors whose perseverance will inspire all teams to come. Reagan Andrew ’22, Jack Niedringhaus ’22, and Eric Podgorny ’23 made the All-Metro League First Team, and Gordon Walker ’22 made the All-Metro League Second Team.

Cycling

A season of evolution into new competitions

The Varsity Cycling team continued to evolve over the 2021 season. Highlights included multiple podium finishes from Will Falk ’21 at Tuesday Night Worlds held weekly at Carondelet Park in the B race. Falk developed a devastating sprint finish that other competitors quickly respected. Baz Cosmopoulos ’22 also proved to be a formidable competitor in the C race. But this season was not all about criterium racing. The team pedaled into the world of time trialing at the Wednesday Night Time Trials held at the Marais Temps Clair Conservation Area in St. Charles for a 13k time trial. Falk, Cosmopolous, Fiona Richards ’21, Jonah Zacks ’21, and Amara Autry ’23 all held a top-three standing in their respective divisions. The team looks to rebuild in 2022 after graduating nine of the 12 team members.

Girls Soccer

Successful season against a difficult schedule

The MICDS Varsity Girls Soccer team had another successful season this spring finishing with a record of 10-7. The Rams played several of the top teams in the area and held their own against a very challenging schedule. Highlights of the season include victories over Villa Duchesne, John Burroughs, Clayton, Ladue, and a penalty shoot-out victory over Westminster in the district tournament. Senior captains Estephanie Estrada ’21, Katie Nuzum ’21, and Sophia Weber ’21 were instrumental in developing team camaraderie and a collective spirit after missing the 2020 season. With a very young team, their experience and leadership were critical to our success. Campbell Schultz ’22 led the offense with eight goals and nine assists. Estrada, Zara Nourie ’23, and Parker Scheele ’23 led a stingy defense that kept the Rams in every game. Unfortunately, the season came to an end in a hard-fought double-overtime district match versus Ursuline. The soccer program is deeply thankful for the contributions of everyone involved.

Water Polo

Don Casey

A year of rebuilding

The team’s regular schedule was only 11 games, including eight of the top 10 teams in the state and no tournaments. In 2020, the MICDS Water Polo team was ranked number 1 in the State due to its returning players who had finished number 4 in the State Tournament the year before. This year, only two players on the roster had more than one year of experience at the Varsity level. The Rams found victory against Pattonville, Kirkwood, and John Burroughs School in the regular season and defeated Summit in the first round of the state tournament before falling to Kirkwood in the second round. The team is looking forward to returning with more experience next year.
