Mayor of Ladue Talks About Community with 1st Graders

First graders have been working on a new social studies curriculum where they are studying community. Veronica Wachter, 1st Grade Teacher, shares, «One of our big focus points is helping students gradually start to understand what community means, what kinds of communities exist and who the leaders of communities are.» To illustrate this, Ms. Wachter and fellow 1st Grade Teacher Robin Campbell have been inviting several community leaders to spend time with their students, and this week’s guest was Nancy Spewak, Mayor of Ladue!

Mayor Spewak spoke to our 34 first graders and shared information about herself, her role as a leader and her service to the Ladue community. By talking to the mayor, students were challenged to think about the role of the mayor as a source of community.

Maybe one of our MICDS 1st graders will be inspired to lead their classroom community or grow to become mayor themselves! Thank you for inspiring our students, Mayor Spewak!
