Passport Series Honors Black History Month

„In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.“ ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

„If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.“ ~ Bishop Desmond Tutu

„We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.“ ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Last week, the MICDS Passport Series honored Black History Month.

After introductions, participants tested their Black History IQ with a short, fun ice breaker that included multiple-choice questions. Then, MICDS parents Kevin Washington and Rufus Moore gave a condensed overview and timeline of African American history that covered the past 400 years. They shared insights and discussions around the historical and ongoing struggle for freedom and equality. The event concluded with a discussion about ongoing issues affecting African Americans today and ways we can work together moving forward.

Upon helping put the event together, Washington shared, „I’ve really enjoyed brushing up on the subject of Black History and being reminded about the historical and ongoing struggles seeking freedom and equality. It was also refreshing and enlightening to learn about so many contributions that African Americans have made to this country over the past 400 years.“

Attendees also enjoyed a variety of delicious soul food from The Choice Restaurant, including fried chicken, fish, collard greens, mac ’n cheese, black-eyed peas and potato casserole.

A big thank you to Kevin Washington and Rufus Moore, African-American Support Committee Co-Chairs and Collaborative & Inclusion Committee Members, for organizing this fantastic event!

The MICDS Black Student Union is also honoring Black History Month with several events for students and some for families. Check out the BSU Black Future Month events here! (Note: current MICDS students are welcome to all events, parents are welcome to the Bond Lecture, and families are welcome to the wrap-up event.)
