Senior Earns the 2019-2020 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal

A huge congratulations to Hasani Spann ’21 who has been awarded the 2019-2020 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal! “Founded in 1824, Rensselaer is the oldest technological institution in North America, and it is located in the Capital Region of New York State. This prestigious award has been awarded since 1916 to one student in any given high school and is designed to recognize that student’s strength and success in the fields of mathematics and science. Medalists who apply, are admitted to, and enroll at Rensselaer are awarded a scholarship with $30,000 per year.” Way to go, Hasani!

Julia Ray at State

Girls Cross Country Runner to Watch

Julia Ray ’23 is highlighted on STL Today as a girls cross country runner to watch. Quoting from the article, as a freshman, Julia “…became the first MICDS individual state champion last season while helping the program win its first team state championship. Ray rolled to Missouri’s Class 3 individual title in a time of 18:13.8 that was the area’s top 5-kilometer performance of the season by more than 17 seconds as the Rams won the team championship by 25 points. A first-team Post-Dispatch All-Metro selection and third-team All-Decade pick, Ray tuned up for her historic state performance by winning the Class 3 District 4 title. She also was the Metro League runner-up and finished third in two other meets.” We can’t wait to continue cheering Julia on!

Cycling Successes for MICDS Cycling Captain

On August 22, MICDS Cycling Captain Fiona Richards ’21 won the Missouri Women’s Category 4 state championship and also successfully defended her Missouri Juniors title for girls under 19 at the Missouri State Criterium Championships! The races were held at the Gateway Motor Speedway and, with precautions taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, drew adult and junior racers from around the state and region. Criterium racing involves competitors racing around a closed-loop road for approximately 40 minutes at a time at speeds of over 20 miles per hour. It is one of the most popular forms of road bike racing and the one in which the MICDS Cycling Team usually competes. Fiona won her Juniors race first in the morning and then stayed at the racetrack to take the Category 4 title in the women’s race.

Fiona is grateful to her MICDS coaches, Chris Ludbrook and Britta Seigel, for all of their help and encouragement on and off the bike over the past three years. Way to go, Fiona!
