Welcome Prospective Families!

As you search for the best fit for your child (and your family) we hope you will visit. The best way to get to know our School is to experience it firsthand through a visit or a tour.

We encourage you to ask the schools that you visit about the things that are important to you. At MICDS, you will find that we will challenge your child beyond their comfort zone, providing the support they need to go further than they imagined. We hope you visit to see firsthand what MICDS can offer your child. In the meantime, consider the following factors that truly set us apart from any other school in the region.

  • Faculty Commitment

Ask any MICDS alum what had the most profound effect on them during their school years and they will tell you about their great teachers. MICDS faculty are seasoned educators who are experts in their fields and passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people. It’s not just that 70 percent of them hold advanced degrees, it’s that they take an active interest in their students’ all-around success, serving as mentors, instructors and coaches. With small classes - and a small course load - our faculty have the time to focus on building an engaging curriculum, the freedom to explore a variety of topics and dedicate time where it will matter most – investing in our students. Our Middle and Upper School faculty teach just four courses per day, which enables them to spend one-on-one time with students, participate in co-curricular activities on campus, such as coaching basketball, advising the School newspaper, or participating in a community service trip abroad.
  • Academic Excellence

It's not just what students learn that makes MICDS stand out – it’s how. Today's students learn best when they are engaged in work that has a practical application to their lives. MICDS offers an innovative, hands-on curriculum that is discussion based and focused on solving real-world problems. From writing code to programming a robot in a state-of-the-art lab, to unlocking a scientific mystery in Forensics class, to researching viable investment opportunities for the Student Investment Club – MICDS leads the way in forward-thinking programming that offers a wealth of authentic learning opportunities. MICDS offers 19 different AP courses and is one of the most active participants in the Advanced Placement program in the Midwest Region of The College Board. MICDS students are engaged and they enjoy learning.
  • The Benefits of a JK – 12th Grade School

Because MICDS spans early childhood through 12th grade, our faculty and programming can attend to the careful articulation of the curricular and co-curricular experiences that allow students to develop the habits of heart and mind at the very core of the mission and beliefs of MICDS. There is a consistent and disciplined approach in curriculum and transitions from grades and divisions. The three divisions at MICDS – lower, middle and upper school – provide continuity and consistency in a nurturing and challenging environment.  Each division promotes teaching the individual student to think critically, creatively and logically to master learning skills and subject matter, and to embrace a lifelong love of learning. MICDS students finish each year prepared for and excited about the challenges that await them at the next grade level.
  • Superb Resources

MICDS has a campus like no other: modern and exceptional facilities situated on 100 sprawling acres. From the School’s state-of-the-art STEM facility, the best in the region and a living example of sustainable design, to professional theatres, technology centers, and more than 30 acres dedicated to athletic and playing fields, all students, JK – 12, benefit from the school’s vast resources. MICDS is committed to ensuring that the school develops and maintains first-rate facilities.
  • School Community

The School embraces and values the unique qualities and traits of each of its members. We seek students who demonstrate the potential to meet high academic and personal standards and contribute to the vitality of the School. Because we believe that students learn from each other, it is central to the School’s mission that the student body be coeducational and represent diverse economic, cultural, and racial backgrounds, as well as a variety of interests and talents. Students of color comprise 30% of the MICDS student body and our students come to us from 65 zip codes around the St. Louis area. School-wide, 40 languages and dialects, in addition to English, are spoken in our student’s homes. A variety of campus organizations, initiatives and diversity programs help to encourage and support cultural diversity and academic structures at MICDS. At MICDS, we create a sense of community based on our mission that seeks and welcomes diverse backgrounds and perspectives as integral components of the foundation of excellence upon which our School is built.
  • Intentional Use of Technology

In an increasingly technological world, we believe it is our responsibility to embrace this tool, to guide students to discern when technology is the appropriate tool and when it is not, and to lead them to become respectful and responsible digital citizens. With the maturation of the internet and the ever-increasing array of digital learning tools, it is absolutely essential for our students to become highly-skilled and responsible users of technology in all aspects of their lives. From creating multimedia presentations, to writing blogs to manipulating real-world data for analysis, technology is leveraged in all grade levels to deepen student engagement and allow for a more thorough exploration of content. Beginning in fifth grade, all students participate in the School’s one-to-one laptop/netbook program. At MICDS, all faculty are committed to the thoughtful integration of technology into the curriculum to deepen student engagement and inspire a more sophisticated level of critical thinking and analysis.
  • College Counseling

Our nationally recognized four-year college counseling program sets us apart from other schools in our region. MICDS graduates are consistently accepted by the nation’s most selective and prestigious universities – our graduates attend more top 30 colleges in the U.S. than any other school in the area. Our college acceptance record is an enviable one, but it’s the student, with the assistance of our college counselors, who determines his or her own course.
  • School Size

Our School is small; personal on the inside, yet large enough in size and well-equipped with resources to offer so many more opportunities for our students in and beyond the classroom. As a relatively small school, everyone is active and is recognized in class, on the stage, on our sports teams, and through participation in clubs and activities.
  • Athletics

MICDS has a long and proud tradition in athletics. The School offers more than 48 interscholastic teams and all students, JK-12, experience a thorough grounding in physical education and participate in athletics. Our on-campus athletic facilities include over 30 acres of athletic fields, state-of-the-art athletic and fitness centers, as well as two gymnasiums. At MICDS, the learning that occurs on the field is as important to the students’ experience as the learning that goes on in the classroom. Nearly 90% of our head coaches are also faculty members at the school, and all but one of our head coaches played the sport they coach at the collegiate level. For our student-athletes, winning is just part of the experience. The rest is about the values they’ll carry with them their entire lives; leadership, empowerment, teamwork and most importantly, education.
  • Arts at MICDS

The Arts play a significant role in the life of the School, both through academic courses and co-curricular opportunities instilling a lifelong affinity for and foundation in the arts in all MICDS students. Every year, students in all three divisions—Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools—work with arts faculty to showcase their talents. Through stellar theater productions, outstanding musical and dance performances, and engaging art exhibits, students and faculty invite families and the community to experience the joy and freedom of creative expression that are essential components of the artistic journey. 100% of MICDS students study music, dance, theater or the visual arts throughout their education.
