Much to the delight of our MICDS community, the Upper School Choirs brightly presented the annual Spring Pops Concert on Thursday and Friday, April 25 and 26, 2024, in Orthwein Theatre. Under the direction of Dana Self, Upper School Performing Arts Teacher, the concert featured the MICDS Treble Choir, Tenor-Bass Choir, and Chamber Choir in a revue of music from the pop, classic pop, and musical theater genres. „This concert is a favorite of many in the MICDS community and is the culmination of four months of hard work by our talented students,“ said DSelf, as our students like to call him. „This high-energy production was completely choreographed by the students and was accompanied by a live stage band for the first time since COVID.“
Songs featured in the 2024 concert included A Million Dreams (The Greatest Showman), Cheerleader (OMI), Telephone (Beyoncé), Viva La Vida (Coldplay), Lollipop (The Chordettes), Home (Phillip Phillips), Turn the Beat Around (Gloria Estefan), Blackbird (The Beatles), Waterfalls (Bette Middler), I’m Still Standing (Elton John), and more!
Three featured performances, selected by audition, took to the stage both nights. Featured performances on Thursday included soloists Haya Hussain ’24 and Joe Walsh ’25, and a duet by Reina Banerjee ’27 and Grace VIllagomez ’25. On Friday, the featured performances were by soloist Kate Williamson ’24, a senior men’s quartet of Wyatt Dickherber ’24, Ben Iken ’24, Intisar Iqbal ’24, and Davis Schukar ’24, and a duet by Banerjee and Villagomez. Banerjee shared, „The concert was a very fun experience to perform with friends and to sing! Doing the dances while singing is a totally different experience and is so enjoyable to perform in and to watch others perform. Performing the duet was an amazing moment as well and was really fun to prepare for and perform at the concert, especially with Grace!“
„The concert turned out really well because all three choirs worked hard for months, maintaining focus through schoolwork, sports, and fatigue,“ reflected Joe. „Performing a solo was nerve-wracking, but in the end, it was a great experience and I would really suggest auditioning to any underclassmen who are on the fence about it.“

With guitars, sunglasses, strobe lights, theatrical smoke, and shirts reflecting every color of the rainbow, the performances certainly made a bright memory for all of our students and their audiences.
