Junior Mikaela Mikulec ’24 has been dubbed a “player to watch” as the Girls Tennis season begins, according to STL Today. Mikaela was the number 1 singles player and also shined in doubles action in Class 3.
Fittingly, Mikulec secured a nailbiting victory for MICDS in the Metro League’s top singles flight against John Burroughs’ Sahana Madala ’24. When each player won eight of the 16 games, they had a tiebreaker match that Mikulec won after another close game.

Grace Coppel '25 Wins Division at Chicago Sprint Triathlon
Grace Coppel ’25 is an All-State Swimmer as well as a State Qualifier in Cross Country. Last Saturday, she put two-thirds of those skills together along with cycling to win the women’s 19 and under division of the Chicago Sprint Triathlon sponsored by Lifetime fitness.
The sprint triathlon consists of a half-mile swim, a 15-mile bike ride, and a 5k run. Grace covered the total event in 1:34.29, winning by nearly 10 minutes over her closest competitor. The Chicago site was picked because their family had competed there on many occasions, but this was the first time for Grace on this course.
During the competition, Coppel had no idea of her position in the race as there were over 2,000 competitors overall who started in heats of 20. Grace was 102 of all entrants! She was the first swimmer out of the rough open water swim and then she, unfortunately, crashed on the bike with another athlete after the first mile which cost her some time as well as a few bruises. She managed to push through the run and went on to the division win. Coppel said she enjoys the triathlon and plans to compete in several more. Grace added why she likes triathlon events: “Not only is it a competition and a race, but it is also an adventure. So many things happen out there during a race, and it is unpredictable”
Head Cross Country Coach Jim Lohr says, “Grace is an outstanding athlete and loves to compete. I am really impressed that she was able to win but not surprised.” Grace will start her cross-country season for the Rams on Saturday in Columbus Indiana. Keep it up, Grace!
