8th Graders put on a mock trial

8th Grade Students Visit Local Courts

Eighth graders studying American government traveled to some local courts this week. Students sat in on real trials at the St. Louis County Court, Saint Charles County Court and Eagleton Federal Court. Trials observed included a fraud case sentencing, alleged physical intimidation by a public official at the polls and more. Students also had the opportunity to speak with attorneys, judges and one group toured the St. Louis County juvenile detention center.

When students returned to campus they engaged in a trial of their very own, the case of Mary’s Missing Lunch. Faculty members took on the role of judge, defendant, plaintiff and witness while the students acted as jury. As they worked through the case, students learned a little more about some of the trial lingo they heard in court and the decision-making process of the jury.
