Summer Travel to Italy

Upper School Latin students spent eight days in Italy this June, beginning in Rome, where they visited sights including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Capitoline Museums, the Pantheon and Ostia Antica. They then traveled to the Tuscany region to Siena, stopping at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli and the Duomo in Orvieto en route. The Etruscan city, Volterra, were the next stop, followed by Florence, Verona, Ravenna, and finally, Venice.

In addition to the focus on classical Italy, the students also experienced the Renaissance era and modern culture in Italy, including: dining near the Trevi Fountain and in the Piazza Navona area; spending time at the Piazza di Spagna, home of the famous Spanish Steps; visiting the Accademia Gallery to see Michelangelo’s statuary masterpiece, David, and Boticelli’s Madonna and Child; strolling along the Ponte Vecchio, one of the best-loved sights of Florence; and riding a vaporetto water bus in Venice to visit St. Mark’s Square.
