On February 12, 2024, Mary Institute and Country Day School (MICDS) hosted an unforgettable evening at Brauer Hall, marking another successful installment of the Parents Association Passport Series. This year’s theme, « Voices and Ventures, » was a vibrant celebration of cultural diversity, storytelling, and entrepreneurship, capturing the essence of the inclusivity that MICDS stands for. The event featured renowned author Vivian Gibson as the guest speaker, whose narrative power and deep cultural insights enriched the minds and hearts of all who attended.
Vivian Gibson, acclaimed for her memoir The Last Children of Mill Creek, shared the profound stories of communities often overlooked in mainstream narratives. Her presentation illuminated these communities’ rich heritage and resilience, offering attendees a rare glimpse into the lives shaped by history and culture. Gibson’s storytelling was not just an act of reminiscence but a call to recognize and celebrate the diverse voices that make up our shared history. We understood how her storytelling was critical in using narratives to spark conversation, encourage empathy, and foster a deeper understanding of other peoples’ experiences.
The Q&A session with Vivian Gibson following her presentation offered a deep dive into the themes of her book. It provided a platform for meaningful dialogue about recognizing and valuing diverse narratives. This interaction further solidified the evening’s impact, leaving attendees inspired and more informed about the significance of storytelling’s impact on Black history in St. Louis.
In keeping with the spirit of diversity and entrepreneurship, « Voices and Ventures » also spotlighted the creative genius of local Black-owned businesses. These enterprises showcased their products and services, from art and fashion to culinary delights, demonstrating the Black community’s immense talent and entrepreneurial spirit. This marketplace allowed attendees to discover and support these businesses and served as a testament to their cultural and economic contributions to our society.
A highlight of the evening was the unique culinary experience provided to guests. In a nod to the cultural theme of the event, attendees were treated to soul food bento boxes. These bento boxes featured a culturally rich menu of smoked turkey, mac and cheese, collard green egg rolls, and banana pudding for dessert. This thoughtful selection of dishes was more than just a meal; it celebrated cultural heritage and culinary innovation, embodying the event’s ethos.
Music was incorporated into the « Voices and Ventures » event, which served as a powerful testament to the vast spectrum of Black musical heritage. These genres ranged from traditional African rhythms and gospel to blues, jazz, hip-hop, and beyond. Much like storytelling, music is a pivotal aspect of Black culture, offering another dimension of expression and connection. It amplified the event’s mission to uplift and highlight the richness of Black culture, making it an even more powerful and inclusive celebration.
