Humans Learn Cheat Codes For Success!

Story and photos by Abby Wickham ’30

In the Winter Term class Human Cheat Codes, Mrs. Garcia, Middle School English Teacher, and Coach Goldberg, Teacher and Strength and Conditioning Coach, are helping student athletes. Mrs. Garcia says that the learning goals for this class are for students to become more aware and informed about how sleep, nutrition, and recovery impact them as student-athletes.

Jordyn Haywood ’28 says they’ve been interviewing college alumni from MICDS and asking questions about sleep, nutrition, and recovery. The MICDS alumni were Parker Scheele ’23 – Indiana Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper, Julia Ray ’23 – Tennessee Cross Country/Track & Field, Steve Hall ’23 – Lindenwood Football, Kate Oliver ’22 – Harvard Field Hockey, PJ Behan ’22 – Brown Lacrosse, Anna Lochhead ’22 – Colgate Field Hockey, Brandon Mitchell Day ’22– Dartmouth Basketball, and Reagan Andrew ’22 – Butler Football.

As soon as I walked in, I noticed they were working hard on their computers and reviewing as a team.

Abby Walsh ’28 says that they’ve learned about nutrition, sleep, and how we can benefit from getting the right nutrition and sleep and how it can help us with sports and prevent injury. She says she will fix her sleep schedule to decrease her injury risk.

The students have also learned about peak performance. Peak performance is your performance being at your absolute best. Tips for having a peak performance are consistency, fueling your body, using your body effectively, focusing, confidence, sleep, and trust. In this class, most of the students are athletes. They review the lunch menu and talk about healthy eating choices at school lunch.
