Spring Fling: A Week of Fun and Community for Middle Schoolers

It’s that time of year again! With spring in its steps, the entire Middle School launched its annual Spring Fling and the newly added athletic spirit event, the Spring Classic. The entire week offered a full slate of excitement and camaraderie for our fifth through eighth graders.

The week kicked off with several spirit days, from special hats to full-out spirit, where students got their spirit game faces on for the energetic opening ceremony in Mary Eliot Chapel. Each advisory showcased their team spirit with colorful cheers and enthusiastic performances. Eliot Chapel was awash in rainbow colors for the “Color Wars” spirit day, and the volume was turned up to eleven.

With two student choice blocks in the day, there was a plethora of activities available for students. Field Day Fun activities included favorites such as a kickball tournament, knockout basketball, Hungry Hungry Human Hippos, and more, fostering teamwork and friendly competition. Meanwhile, the Front Lawn Fair offered exhilarating carnival-like attractions such as blow-up slides, obstacle courses, and yard games.

For those seeking a more relaxed pace, other sessions provided a variety of activities to suit every interest. From campus walks and movie time to karaoke parties and Open Art, students had the freedom to unwind and enjoy themselves at their own pace. A highlight of the day was the grab-and-go lunch from the Middle School Dining Hall, where picnic-style meals by advisory added to the festivities.

To close out the day, all Middle School students, faculty, and staff elevated the vibe even more in the South Gym for the Spring Classic, a spring take on the Winter Classic, a spirited and seasonal athletic-related event that debuted in January. The Spring Classic opened with a rally cry musical number by the Middle School Band and Choir before leading into the competition round of games, such as bobsledding, pickleball, fake horseback riding, and more, with a closing number by the Concert Orchestra. Students cheered to a deafening roar and headed out to enjoy several Middle School athletic contests on campus.

Behind the scenes, the success of Spring Fling and the Spring Classic was made possible by the dedicated efforts of our planning team, led by Middle School Teachers Callie Bambenek, Jason Roberts, and Kelly Walsh. Their vision, coupled with the enthusiastic participation of teachers and staff, ensured that the day was a huge success. As Roberts remarked, “Today I saw happy kids, bright smiling faces and laughter, friendly competitions, memory making, and more. This is truly the best community of humans working together to achieve something bigger than ourselves and we consider ourselves so lucky to work with such kind-hearted professionals and helpful humans. They say it takes a village, and this village is such a great one to reside in!”

Spring Fling 2024 was a testament to the unbounded spirit of our Middle Schoolers, who enthusiastically embraced this special day so close to the end of the school year. As the Middle Schoolers say, “Only four more Mondays!”
