Two Students Selected as Pete Wilson '51 Fellows for Normandy Academy

MICDS sophomores Aiyla Ahmad ’26 and Cade Miller ’26 were selected after applying to be the 2024 Pete Wilson ’51 fellows for the National World War II Museum’s Normandy Academy, a 12-day immersive summer learning experience in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Normandy, France that challenges students to learn from the choices made before and during the historic D-Day landings. Through the generosity of Mr. Edward T. Baur ’64, two MICDS students are selected every year to receive full scholarships (including flights, tuition, meals, etc.) to participate in the Academy.

“I originally gained interest in applying for the experience when fellows presented about their trip to my ninth-grade class,” shares Cade. “Being able to apply this school year, I did more research about the trip and I was intrigued about learning the history of WWII as well as seeing French architecture and art, such as the Bayeux tapestry, so I decided I would apply for a chance at an amazing opportunity.

“My grandfather, William Collins Sr., retired from the United States Army after more than 25 years, and he was stationed in West Germany at the time of German reunification in 1990. My mom was there and only nine years old when the Berlin Wall fell. She has often told me about her time living in the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland Pfalz military base in Kaiserslautern. Hearing stories from my mom’s childhood, I’ve always been amazed that events that happened during World War II had impacts decades later – both globally in the world and in my family. Considering this, I believe this trip would better help me understand my place in history and how the past continues to influence the world around me too. Additionally, by learning about heroism and leadership displayed by United States soldiers and members of the French resistance during the war, I would hope to instill some of those virtues in me. I would like to thank the Normandy Academy, Mr. Edward T. Baur, and MICDS for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

When asked about why she was inspired to apply, Aiyla expressed, “I wanted to apply to Normandy Academy because I’ve always been interested not only in WWII but also in the lives of the people who lived through the war and its surrounding events. That’s what I’m most excited about—to get to hear about people’s lives and personal accounts of something that we’ve all learned about. It brings a completely new perspective to explore. Not only that, but by hearing personal accounts and sharing them with others, it keeps events like the Holocaust from being forgotten. That’s one of the most important things about history—it serves as a reminder to not replicate the mistakes of those before us. I’m so excited to experience Normandy Academy and share the stories that I discover.”
