MICDS Students Learned How to Sew

Story and photos by: Max Brodeur ’28

During Winter Term at MICDS, fifth and sixth-grade students got the opportunity to learn how to sew. These students are learning an activity that Ines Shultz, Middle School World Language Teacher, enjoyed when she was younger. She hoped that the students would feel the same about sewing. When I first walked into the classroom, I noticed everyone was smiling and looked like they were enjoying sewing.

Mrs. Shultz is teaching these students by having them sew ripped fabric back together. Her goal for the students is to get familiar with the basics of sewing. The students practiced sewing in different ways. Mrs. Shultz said about her experience in this class, “Students love the product that comes out of sewing.” The students in her class looked like they were having much fun. The students were working on making their designs in the fabric, and all the students, when I observed them, looked very into the topic. Mrs. Shultz decided to teach this class because “Learning how to do basic sewing is a skill that we all should be able to know. It’s extremely useful.” How you learn while being able to design what you want led to having a lot of fun during Winter Term 2024.
