Health Science Club Students Visit Goldfarb School of Nursing

Five MICDS students who are part of the MICDS Health Sciences Club recently visited the Goldfarb School of Nursing at Washington University in St. Louis on a Health Sciences field trip. Two of them shared about the experience below:

“At WashU, we were able to get an idea of the different fields of nursing someone can pursue,” explains Priyasha Munshi ’28. “There were amazing teachers and mentors at the experience who explained what nursing really is and how it has impacted society.”

Shiv Prahalathan ’28 added, “We learned how a general nurse operating station/room looks, as well as the locations and functions of most of the tools. We then used virtual reality headsets to place ourselves in a nursing room, where we were then told to complete tasks (e.g., find or use an object/tool).”

“[The] motorized mannequins actually gave a pulse and had working motors in them that made their mannerisms realistic,” said Munshi. “At the end of the trip, we were able to talk to college students and graduates who had projects, experience, and great advice for high schoolers when stepping into the field of nursing.”

“We got to talk with a bunch of people in the nursing field but with different jobs,” added Prahalathan. “We got to ask them questions and discover more about the path as a whole.”

A highlight for both Prahalathan and Munshi was using a stethoscope and being able to find pulses in the mannequins they worked with. Prahalathan also mentioned, “This is one of the only experiences with a virtual reality station. It was very interesting and fun.”
