Every year, the Middle School elects representatives to the Community Leadership Council (CLC), whose members are tasked with building community, camaraderie, and connection throughout our fifth through eighth grades at MICDS. Similar to Student Council, whose leaders guide school-wide needs, issues, and events, CLC’s student leaders are laser-focused on their class’ particular community desires, needs, and events. Meeting monthly, these members oversee community service initiatives, maintain clear communications for their grade, and help plan such events as the annual talent show and Spring Fling. They also help with all-school assemblies.
Although the eighth-grade CLC representatives were selected in the spring, voting for the CLC representatives in our fifth, sixth, and seventh grades was conducted this past Tuesday, September 30. To run, interested students were required to submit a speech to their grade-level dean last week. The speech was to include:
- What qualities should a CLC member possess?
- What makes you a good leader?
- How will you work with all the members of your class to bring their ideas or concerns to either the CLC team or the dean?
- What ideas do you have for middle school to build community?
Those running also needed to create a poster to display in their grade-level hallway. The posters included the student’s name and photo, as well as positive leadership and teamwork traits they possess, and they had the option to include a fun slogan.
On September 30, during Community Time, those running for CLC officially gave their speeches in Harris Reading Room (seventh grade), Mary Eliot Chapel (sixth grade), and in Middle School Fifth Grade Dean & Spanish Teacher Christine Mayer’s classroom (fifth grade). Following, students voted for their top three CLC selections for their class.
