Bridge to Success Winter Term Recap

Story and photos by Heidi Millman ’31

In the Winter Term course, Bridge to Success, students use their engineering skills to build a bridge that will hold the most weight as possible. Students work together to construct and build their bridge while learning how to problem solve along the way.

In this course, students use toothpicks and glue to construct a bridge. Students use strategies such as putting two toothpicks together to make it more stable. Students even make an entire layer of toothpicks for stability.

Middle School Math Teacher Kevin Frankenberger was asked what inspired him to create this course. He responded, “The chance to let the students use their math skills, their engineering skills, and creativity to design and build, and come up with solutions to problems that they come across, and then to go out and test what they think, and understand that failure is a great opportunity to learn.” During this course, students will experience many challenges, but Mr. Frankenberger does a great job of teaching students how to persevere and learn from their mistakes.

Aryana Kamat ’31 was asked why she would recommend this class to other people. She responded, “I would recommend this class to other people because it’s a really good way to help your problem-solving skills, and develop how to work through tough situations and learn from them.”

Emily Hill ’31 was asked what she wants to take away from this class. She responded, “Being able to build a bridge while getting past hard obstacles.”

This Winter Term course is a great opportunity to acquire new skills while showing collaboration and teamwork. Although this course may be challenging, the students enjoy new challenges and working together.
