Fifth Grade Students Have an Out-Of-This-World Experience at the Challenger Learning Center

Bright blue skies, a warm breeze, and dozens of eager astronauts combined for perfect rocket-launching conditions at the Challenger Learning Center in Ferguson on Wednesday morning. MICDS fifth-grade students took their annual field trip to the center that, this year, coincided with NASA’s Artemis II mission. The Challenger Learning Center was established after the loss of the Challenger Space Shuttle to honor the crew’s legacy by inspiring future generations through hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It was created by the families of the astronauts to help students develop curiosity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while exploring the excitement of space and discovery.

While at the center, students took part in two projects: an immersive space station simulation called Expedition Mars and a rocket-building workshop. While working on their rockets, teams of students were given a budget and common materials, then tasked with engineering their projectiles to fly the furthest, making sure to complete the build on time and on budget. After an initial launch, students were able to fix or redesign their rockets to improve their flight performance. “This process allows them to learn from mistakes and try again—just like real engineers,” says Leslie Smart, Middle School Science Teacher.

On the Expedition Mars mission, students were assigned roles as scientists, engineers, or communication specialists. Half the group operated  “mission control” on Earth, while the other half performed tests and experiments on the “space station.” Together, students completed important tasks, solved problems, and made decisions to help their mission succeed. “Along the way, they faced unexpected challenges, just like real astronauts do. So teamwork, careful thinking, and clear communication were very important,” Ms. Smart remarks. Both experiences will help fifth graders think like scientists and problem-solvers while having a lot of fun.”

Way to embrace this out-of-this-world opportunity, Rams!
