The Upper School production of Little Women, held May 1-3 in the Vincent Price Blackbox Theatre, brought a heartfelt and intimate interpretation of a beloved classic to the stage. Set during the Civil War era, the musical follows the lives of the four March sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy, as they navigate growing up, pursue their dreams, and define their identities in a changing world.
The production leaned into the strengths of a black box setting, using minimal yet purposeful staging to highlight character relationships and emotional storytelling. This close, immersive environment allowed the audience to feel deeply connected to the performers, especially during pivotal moments such as Jo’s struggle with her ambitions and the family’s shared hardships and joys.
At the center of the story is Jo March, whose determination to become a writer drives much of the narrative. Her journey includes rejection, self-discovery, and eventual success, and it anchors the performance. The supporting characters each bring their own emotional arcs to life. Meg’s desire for stability, Beth’s quiet kindness, and Amy’s growth into maturity create a well-rounded portrayal of sisterhood.
The production was directed by Suki Peters, Co-Artistic Director of Cherokee Street Theatre. Her leadership helped shape a thoughtful and cohesive performance. Cast members reflected positively on the experience. Libby Hoffman ’28, who portrayed Meg, shared, “The process was taxing but enjoyable, and I really like spending time with my friends and our guest director,” highlighting both the challenges and rewards of bringing the show to life.

Musically, the show reflects the emotional highs and lows of the characters through songs that convey hope, loss, and perseverance. The cast’s vocal performances and ensemble work emphasize the themes of love and resilience that define the story.
Overall, Little Women was a moving and thoughtfully executed performance that captured the enduring appeal of the March sisters’ story. Through strong acting, expressive music, and an intimate staging style, the show highlights the importance of family, ambition, and staying true to oneself.
