Becoming Global Citizens: Students Soar in National Language Exams

It’s that time of year again where Middle and Upper Schoolers partake in the national language exams. Over the past couple of weeks, their scores have been shared with their teachers. Congratulations to the students listed below for excelling in their national language exams during the 2025-2026 academic year!

National French Contest

Many of our French students took the Grand Concours (National French Contest) this spring. The Grand Concours is an online, written French test with a multiple-choice listening component and reading component. The exam is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students are evaluated for their written, oral, and listening comprehension skills in French. This year, over 46,000 students participated in the exam.

National awards are determined as follows:

  • PLATINE/Platinum — Highest score in level/division (Nat’l rank 1)
  • OR/Gold – Students in the 95th percentile and above
  • ARGENT/Silver – Students in the 85th through 94th percentile
  • BRONZE/Bronze – Students in the 75th through 84th percentile

National Latin Exam

Upper School

In early March, MICDS Latin students in the Upper School completed the National Latin Exam. According to the NLE syllabus, the exam provides “an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge of Latin and the Roman world on a test consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions. The exam focuses on the student’s ability to read and comprehend Latin as outlined in the Standards for Classical Language Learning, a document created by the American Classical League, the Society for Classical Studies, and a host of regional organizations.” See how our students scored below!

National Spanish Exam

Annually, the National Spanish Exam is administered in grades six through 12 and is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. According to the NSE website, the test “measures both content standards (vocabulary and grammar) and performance standards (reading and listening comprehension).”

National awards are determined by the total percentile as follows:

  • ORO/Gold – Students scoring at or above the 95th percentile are awarded a Premio de Oro.
  • PLATA/Silver – Students scoring from the 85th through the 94th percentile receive a Premio de Plata.
  • BRONCE/Bronze – Students scoring from the 75th through the 84th percentiles receive a Premio de Bronce.
