A Wet and Wild Tradition: Senior Boat Races Hit Polk Pond

Senior advisories spent the past several weeks designing and building cardboard boats in preparation for their race across Polk Pond. This year’s senior boat race coincided with the homecoming pep rally, allowing students to harness their energy and channel it into the race. Excitement was high as students, parents, and teachers packed the shore around Polk Pond.

The competition was fierce. While some boats hit rough water, others encountered smooth sailing. Armstrong’s Army, led by Upper School World Languages Teacher David Armstrong, was one of the unfortunate advisories to find the bottom of Polk Pond only a few feet from land. Team Meat, the advisory led by Aaron Elliott, Upper School Library Assistant, and Marie Muth, Upper School World Languages Teacher, found early success. With a win in round one, they secured their spot in the final heat but capsized as the race began. The Diaz Demons, led by Alyoska Diaz, Upper School World Languages Teacher, the Racin’ Graysons, led by Upper School World Languages Teacher Bea Grayson, and the Childs Children, led by Upper School World Languages Teacher Lily Childs, all had strong showings, but none could match the success of team Weiden-Grillas, the advisory led by Upper School World Languages Teacher Kelly Weidenmiller. Just as they did four years ago, Ms. Weidenmiller’s advisory took home the trophy for back-to-back boat race championships.
