Girls on the Run 2018

A 5K Full of Meaning – Girls on the Run

There may have been freezing temperatures on Saturday, November 17, but nothing could stop our MICDS girls from running their Girls on the Run 5K. The race was the victory lap for their completion of the 10-week Girls on the Run program that focuses on “inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”

With the guidance of our four inspiring coaches, Aubrey Schmoll, Amy Scheer, Jennifer Horwitz and Leanne Rohr, this was one of our largest Girls on the Run teams to date with 28 third through sixth graders participating. Coaches followed the curriculum to not only train the girls for their race, but they also taught lessons centered on empowering young girls for a lifetime of healthy living.

Also, part of the Girls on the Run curriculum has the girls design and implement a community service project. The girls decided to collect new toiletry items and gently used hats, gloves and coats for the homeless.

While reflecting on the race day, Coach Aubrey Schmoll shared, “The girls did an amazing job at the race and were very proud of themselves!” We’re just as proud of all of our girls and coaches on the run. After three-point-one miles of empowerment, we can’t wait to see what’s next for these ladies!
