« Noises Off » Brings Laughter to the MICDS Community

An outstanding job to our 11th and 12th grade thespians who performed Noises Off last weekend! From November 22 through 24, the cast and crew offered three performances in Orthwein Theatre that were met with many a smile and laugh.

Called “the funniest farce ever written,” Noises Off, written by English playwright Michael Frayn, presented a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. Doors slamming, on and offstage intrigue and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play. The play first was performed in 1982.

« Noises Off was an incredible experience for me, but it was also incredibly difficult, » shares Jack Morris ’21 who played Gary Lejeune/Roger in the production. « The rehearsal process brought me together with some fantastic people—and I feel such a vulnerable thing (physical comedy) has the power to create long-lasting, valuable relationships.

« The performances taught me to trust in myself and to trust in my castmates. One thing Ms. Hood always stressed to us was that no matter how the audience responds, the most important thing to do is stay confident and relax into the role.

« I’m so glad we were able to bring laughter and joy to the MICDS community, and I hope those who came to see this show will continue to show their support of future performances! »

Hadley Cooper ’20 also shared about her experience in a lead role for Noises Off: « I had an amazing time working with the Noise’s Off cast! I have never had a lead role before, and although at first I was nervous, it was an incredible opportunity. I played Brooke, an airheaded actress who is oblivious to everyone but always has a fun time on stage. This character was super fun to play because she keeps things exciting and light. This show required a lot of hard work because it is a comedy that requires exact movement and timing almost like choreography for a dance. We had such a fun time as a cast, and I would recommend everyone to step out of their comfort zones and audition for a play! »

Thank you to our talented Upper School drama students, Play Director and Fine Arts Teacher Ms. Carolyn Hood, Assistant Director Ms. Gabby Lozon, Set Designer and Fine Arts Teacher Mr. Patrick Huber, Technical Director Mr. Brian Purlee and Stage Manager MacKenzie Macam ’20 for producing such a humorous show! Check out the full program here. A very special thank you to the audience and Arts Boosters for their support of our 11th and 12th grade thespians!
