On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! Cub Scout Pack Gets Pinewood Derby Help from Upper School Friends

On Wednesday, November 13, MICDS Upper School students visited with their younger classmates to work on Pinewood Derby cars. The Pinewood Derby has been a Cub Scout tradition since 1953. For over 65 years, thousands of scouts have created small, unpowered cars to race against their friends.

This year, the scouts in Pack 595 have a leg up against their competition. Upper Schoolers Lucas McCarty ’21, Kyle Fehr ’20, Sophie Fendler ’22 and Patrick O’Brien ’21 brought their physics expertise and technology to help. The Cub Scouts and their friends met in the Upper School Maker Space to talk about how to make fast race cars and to design and 3D print cars for their upcoming race. They drew designs by hand and on laptops, and had a great time together.

Here’s to a successful Pinewood Derby race for the Cub Scouts of Pack 595. Thanks, Upper Schoolers, for your time and help!
