Performing from the Middle School Band to Blueberry Hill

Grace Goggins ’28 has been in the spotlight for her musical talents. She has been working extremely hard these past couple of years with guitar lessons, voice lessons, music songwriting, and most recently, she joined a band! Grace takes lessons four days a week at the STL Rock School. Her band just played a concert at Blueberry Hill in The Duck Room. They performed such songs as As It Was by Harry Styles, Man Eater by Hall and Oates, and Graduate by Third Eye Blind. Grace also plays the drums for the MICDS Middle School Band.

An Excellent Weekend for Girls Squash on the East Coast

By Varsity Girls Squash Coach Robyn Williams

We had a fantastic weekend in Connecticut despite travel delays on Friday, January 19. The team shook off the tiredness from a long travel day and jumped on the courts against Loomis Chaffee on Friday. We won that match 5-2, with wins coming from Avery Summers ’24, Charlotte Derdeyn ’24, Annabelle Medler ’24, and Hannah VanValkenburg ’25.

We took a beautiful two-hour drive to St. George’s School in Rhode Island on Saturday. Our first opponent was the formidable Tabor Academy, who finished second in DII last year behind Andover (who beat us in the semi-finals). This match was by far the most fun match to watch. There were so many exciting matches and points, and every player rose to the challenge and played at a high level. At the number 4 spot, Abby Derdeyn ’25 won the match 3-0 with scores of 11-8, 12-10, and 20-18! Annabelle hung tight at the number 6 spot to clinch her match 3-2, while Hannah won playing smart, methodical squash at number 7, 3-1. With the team match score tied at 3-3, Charlotte D. stepped on court at number 5. This match was a super tight five-setter with many thrilling rallies and ridiculous winners hit by both players. It truly was an exciting match to watch despite being on the losing end of it. I am very pleased with how the team played during this match and how we nearly caused one of the season’s biggest upsets.

We took a quick break between matches and drove a short two minutes to the beach before realizing it was too cold to be there. Within a few minutes, we were back at the courts, waiting to face St. George’s.

This was another exciting match, with many individual matches split between MICDS and St. George’s. St. George’s took the number 2 spot (Charlotte Medler ’26), while Annabelle avenged her sister’s loss and dominated at 6 with a quick 3-0 win to even the team score. Abby came back from being 1-0 down and raced through the next games to win 3-1 to put us up 2-1. Despite a strong start, Hannah lost at number 7, 3-1, allowing St. George’s to tie it up at 2-2. Soon after, Charlotte D. performed very well against her opponent, winning an emphatic 3-0 in just 16 minutes. 3-2 MICDS, with Bridget Clennan ’24 and Avery on. Bridget was down 2-0 and facing match points against her, while Avery was 2-1 down on the opposite court. Suddenly, Bridget’s opponent was off-court, and Bridget was receiving a pep talk about the next game! She’s still in it: 1-2. Avery fought back and won the next game to make it 2-2. Both senior captains were dialed in and ready to dig deep for the wins. Bridget played cool, calm, and collected squash, while Avery played intense power points. Avery clinched the next game to win 3-2 and secure a team victory at 4-2 for MICDS. Bridget was still on court and tied the match up at 2-2. Her opponent was not very happy, but Bridget remained calm and steady despite everyone in the squash center watching her match. She closed out her match and sealed a 5-2 for MICDS against St. George’s.

This was an excellent weekend of squash, and I am so glad we made the trek East to take on these teams! Go Rams!
