Sophomore Rows to Two Gold Medals

This past weekend, Caitlin Wyckoff ’27 won two gold medals in her 3v4 and 3v8 varsity boats at the Midwest Junior Championship Regatta, which is the biggest race of the year for her team besides Nationals. Each full race is a 2k. There is a lot more competition at this competition than in some of their other regattas throughout the year, like Chicago and Cincinnati, and it determines if the team qualifies for Nationals in June (which they did!).

“This is my second spring season rowing,” shares Caitlin, “and I have found that I really love the sport! I heard about it in an email sent out at our school last year and decided to see what it was about. Joining rowing was probably one of the best decisions of my life, and I would totally recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new sport. I have met so many of my close friends through it, and it has helped me in so many different aspects of my academic and athletic career. I love being out on the water, and the sunsets are always super cool!” Caitlin rows for the St. Louis Rowing Club and practices at Creve Coeur Lake.

Caitlin described the racing process: “We do two heats and the top three from each move onto finals,” she shares. “In finals, there are usually the six boats from the heats, and one wildcard, so seven total. For my four, we won by about 11 seconds compared to the next boat (Cincinnati) with a 7:34.266 2k. In my eight, we won compared to the next boat (Chicago) by about four seconds, with a 7:07.654 2k.”

Caitlin adds, “These medals mean a lot to me because they represent all the hard work I have put in this season. This sport takes a lot of time and commitment, but crossing the line first with my best friends makes it all feel worth it. Because we won, we got a plaque, and we get to sign our names on it and hang it in the boathouse. I am very excited because now I get the opportunity to compete for a spot in one of our top boats that will be going to Nationals in Sarasota, Florida in June, so I get to keep my season going!” Way to row, Caitlin!

Freshman's Rowing Team Wins Midwest Junior Rowing Championship

Paolo Giaimo-Ochoa ’28 and his Men’s 8+ Rowing team won the Midwest Junior Rowing Championship at Lake Harsha in Bethel, Ohio. “We rowed a standard 2000-meter course,” Paolo shared. “I have been rowing for almost two years now, and, in the photos below, I am in three seat of the boat—the third person from the right.” Congratulations, Paolo!
