In District Boys Golf action, Ben Gelven ’25 shot a 69 (-2) to win the District Medal and Chase Segal ’27 shot a 77, earning both a trip to State to compete for the Title! Go Rams!

Senior Creates & Runs Coding Club at her Former School

This year, Ellie Reardon ’25 created and ran an after-school Coding Club at Seton Regional Catholic School in St. Charles (where she attended K-8). The school is small and does not otherwise offer any after-school clubs for middle school students interested in STEM. Ellie organized the Coding Club because it was something she wished the school had offered when she attended.

The club consisted of fourth through eighth-grade students. They met once a week after school. The club spent the fall semester learning basic coding concepts, including print functions, strings, integers, variables, and loops. In the second semester, the club used their Python skills to code a choose-your-own-adventure game. Ellie will be studying computer science at WashU in the fall, and so the kids are excited that she can continue the fun when the next school year begins in August.

Freshman Named Missouri Water Polo Player of the Week

Congratulations to Gio Bucci ’28 who was named the Missouri Water Polo Player of the Week according to Missouri Water Polo. His coach says, “Gio has been a part of the MICDS community since he was six years old, and he is now a freshman in high school. This water polo season, he’s making waves—currently ranked #1 in Missouri for Goals per Game, with an impressive average of 6.5. In the off-season, Gio continues to hone his skills by playing with SLAP Water Polo and swimming competitively with CSP Tideriders. His passion for water polo runs in the family—his father played professionally in Italy, inspiring Gio to follow in his footsteps. Outside the pool, Gio enjoys gaming and spending quality time with his siblings and family. “

Electronic Waste Drive is a Huge Success

On Saturday, April 26, the Upper School Community Service Committee held their annual electronics recycling drive in partnership with Executive Personal Computers, Inc. (EPC). All members of the MICDS community were invited to drop off their old electronics to be recycled or properly disposed of.

Electronic waste is a term for old electronics that are no longer usable. Electronics are made up of valuable and rare metals but also have many hazardous chemicals that can affect the environment if disposed of improperly. When e-waste is burnt in incinerators, toxic chemicals such as lead, barium, and flame retardants are released into the air, causing air pollution. Over time, air pollution can hurt water quality, soil, and plant species, creating irreversible damage in ecosystems.

An average of 50 million tons of e-waste is produced each year worldwide, which is a tremendous amount. Of the 62 billion tons of e-waste produced in 2022 globally, only 22.3% was safely and formally recycled (The Global E-waste Monitor). To learn more about EPC and its recycling process, see here.

Thank you to the MICDS community members who donated the following items:
  • Monitors: 15
  • Laptops: 12
  • Speakers: 11
  • Large Flat Screen TVs – 3
  • Completely full boxes of cables and cords – 3
  • Other items included phones, iPads, CPUs, DVD players, headphones, keyboards, and a printer.
  • There were also several miscellaneous items including an electric power washer, a microwave, a record player, a toy car, a fan, a boat propeller, and more!

Thank you to the Community Service Committee for hosting this drive and to all who donated!
