Missouri American Water informed our staff today that they will begin repairs on the ruptured water main just northeast of campus on Warson Road at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. They advised us that MICDS could lose water service to most buildings either intermittently or throughout the duration of the repair, which is scheduled to last most of the day. Until they begin the repair, they cannot predict with confidence the scale or duration of the resulting water outage. Because of the uncertainty of the impact of this water main repair on our facilities, MICDS will be closed to all students tomorrow, Wednesday, January 28, during the school day. Information about after-school activities and athletics is currently unknown and will be communicated at a later time. Especially given this week’s inclement weather disruptions, I regret the necessity of tomorrow’s school-day closure and appeal to you for understanding. We will run a normal 8:00 a.m. start time on Thursday and a 9:00 a.m. late-start time on Friday in all three divisions. In the Middle and Upper Schools, Thursday will be an A day to pair with today's H day, and Friday will be a B9 day. On Monday, we will run a D day as originally scheduled. Thank you for your partnership and understanding. We will be back in touch with you should there be any changes to Missouri American’s water main repair schedule.

Shelly Bhagat ‘22 Presents at International Global Health Conference

Congratulations to Shelly Bhagat ’22 for presenting at the 2021 Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopkins University, held virtually this summer. The conference is a premier global health education program led by JHU students and faculty. Emerging global health leaders in grades 9-12 from around the world learn from one another and some of the world’s leaders in global health, public health, and medicine.

Shelly was one of the few students from Missouri admitted into the highly selective conference program. Shelly discussed the impact of shortening the mental health crisis hotline in the United States, improving access to mental health treatment, and reducing the stigma of mental illness. A representative from the program shared, “Our conference board members, in addition to the student attendees, were very inspired by Shelly’s knowledge, curiosity, passion, and achievements; we very much appreciate her investment in the future of global health.

Katie Mikulec ‘22 Golf Match Medalist

Congratulations to Katie Mikulec ’22 on achieving Match Medalist at the September 27 golf match against John Burroughs, shooting a 38 on the nine-hole course. Katie is a fierce competitor and an outstanding leader on the Girls Golf team as they hit their seasonal stride. Head Coach Diane Gioia shared, “Katie has been instrumental to the growth of the team. We’re looking forward to districts in a couple of weeks!” Way to go, Katie!

Anna Dehlendorf '26 Receives President’s Service Award

Anna Dehlendorf ’26 was recently awarded the President’s Bronze Volunteer Service Award for completing more than 50 hours of community service. The President’s Volunteer Service Award was founded in 2003 to recognize the important role of volunteers in America. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities. Thank you, Anna, for your service!

MICDS Football in the News

The MICDS Football Program will be honored on November 14 by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame! The Hall of Fame shared, “The Mary Institute-Country Day School Football Program has set a high standard for decades and has played for 15 state championships, winning seven of them. Many thanks to the players, coaches, trainers, managers, and fans, both past and present, for helping to build this program over the years. View full program details here.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch recently featured a game recap of the MICDS-John Burroughs Homecoming game on September 25. MICDS set an early tone by halting the Bombers on a first-and-goal in the game’s opening drive and ultimately scored five touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter, to break open a close game.

Six-Game Homecoming Extravaganza Featured in Post Dispatch

The MICDS-John Burroughs Homecoming weekend tradition was recently featured in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, highlighting the rivalry and the camaraderie between the two schools. In the article, Director of Athletics Josh Smith shares, “It’s what you would feel for a football homecoming game, but it’s for all sports, which is pretty neat,” Smith said. “That same sort of spirit permeates everything.” Thanks to all players and fans for a fantastic Homecoming weekend! Upper School History Teacher Tanya Roth Publishes Book

Congratulations to Upper School History Teacher Tanya Roth on the release of her book, Her Cold War, Women in the U.S. Military, 1945–1980, published by the University of North Carolina Press. The book follows the experiences of women in the military from the passage of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act to the early 1980s. 

Roth shares how the equality battles these servicewomen fought between the 40s through the 70s paved the way for women in combat, a prerequisite for promotion to many leadership positions, and opened opportunities for other servicepeople, including those with disabilities, LGBT and gender-nonconforming people, noncitizens, and more.
