Students Cross Borders with Dance and Food

Story and photos/video by Milo Ciaramita ’31

Crossing Borders is a seventh and eighth-grade course in the winter term. During Crossing Borders the students researched traditions, dress, foods, and dance. Mrs. Beasley, a yoga teacher, and Middle School PE Teacher said, “I feel it’s important to experience, learn, and respect all values, beliefs, and traditions.”

The day this reporter visited, all of the kids sat quietly while watching Sudha Venkatachalam, MICDS Data Analyst, because she was doing a presentation to teach the kids about her culture.

Kids tried their style of Indian dancing. Not all the kids were doing the same dance, it looked like they had a show to put on. One of the dances is a Jewish dance called mayim mayim. They also learned Korobushka tai chi kung fu and the fan dance from Elegan Kramer, Director of Instructional Technology and Digital Literacy.

Gus Lochhead ’29 and Rylan Gardner ’29 said, “Dancing is key, so just come and see to learn about cultures across the sea.” Leela Anadkat ’29 said, “It’s fun.”
