Fifth Graders Recharge with a Day of Wellness and Fun

Fifth graders at MICDS traded textbooks for furry friends, PJs, and creative outlets during a much-needed Mental Health Day. The day was filled with activities designed to nourish their minds and souls.

In the morning, students rotated through stations, enjoying activities like leisurely reading, artistic expression, interactive games, and time with their canine friends from Duo Dogs. The afternoon brought a change of pace, with half the class diving into the makerspace to design custom stickers, while the other half attended a thought-provoking session with the CHADS Coalition for Mental Health. The presentation focused on helping students identify feelings, explore ways of coping with difficult emotions, and learn how to access help for themselves or their peers should they feel overwhelmed.

To wind down the day, students enjoyed a movie screening, choosing from one of four family-friendly flicks: The Addams Family, The Book of Life, Shrek, or Minions: The Rise of Ru.

Lower and Middle School Counselor Susie McGaughey said, “I value so much the fact that MICDS makes intentional space and time for students to care for their mental wellbeing, knowing that to be a successful student means also being a well-adjusted human being.”

What a nourishing day for all!
