Rain or Shine Middle Schoolers Rally for Spring Fling

From Homecoming to Arts Fest and every tradition in between, Middle School excitement reaches new heights with the annual Spring Fling and Spring Classic. This festive full-day celebration, exclusively for middle schoolers, brings fifth through eighth graders together to enjoy fun and camaraderie and fire up our Rams fans for the spring sports season.

Spring Fling always kicks off with an annual community service project. This year, students partnered with Got Sneakers to host a week-long athletic shoe drive to reduce landfill waste and support those in need. Students and families donated sneakers of any brand or condition, excluding non-athletic footwear such as boots or sandals. The contributions will be redistributed to people without shoes or responsibly recycled to prevent harmful environmental impacts.

Once their shoe-collection counts were tallied, middle schoolers quickly moved on to a lively opening ceremony in Mary Eliot Chapel. Each advisory showcased their well-rehearsed cheers and themed costumes, filling the chapel with a deafening swell of energy. The spirited display of red, green, white, and black spirit wear for their grade-level “Color Wars” had everyone locked in for a day of fun and games.

Two student choice blocks were built into the day, and students dove into a wide array of activities, such as open art, maker, board games, campus walking, flag football, and more. Field Day games in the MAC featured perennial favorites like kickball, knockout, and Get 20, along with new games such as balloon volleyball, ultimate ball tag (aka dodgeball), all of which promoted teamwork, friendly competition, and many laughs. Due to rainy conditions, the Front Lawn Fair moved inside the MAC, featuring two inflatable slide obstacle courses and yard games such as cornhole, four-square, pickleball, spikeball, and others.

The day culminated in the South Gym, where all Middle School students, faculty, and staff turned up the heat for the Spring Classic, a spirited springtime version of February’s Winter Classic.

Maroon Boom, the Middle School pep club, kicked off the event with a warm thank you for the Spring Fling faculty planners, Middle School English Teacher Kelly Walsh, and Middle School Arts Teacher Jason Roberts, before handing the mic to this year’s emcee, Middle School History Teacher Blake Whitney. A rousing musical performance of the MICDS Rally Song by the Middle School Band, Orchestra, and Choir set the stage for the competitive games that followed.

This year’s slate featured exciting contests, including giant Tic-Tac-Toe, Human Hungry Hungry Hippos, and Wiggle Cup. Whitney and Middle School Assistant Athletic Director & PE Teacher Nick Menneke then introduced the spring sports teams to a hearty roar of spirit before heading out to enjoy several Middle School athletic contests taking place across campus.

Behind the scenes, the Spring Fling and Spring Classic could not have been possible without the dedicated planning team of Middle School Science Teacher & Community Coordinator Callie Bambenek, Menneke, Roberts, and Walsh, and, of course, our student leadership team on the Community Leadership Council. Their enthusiastic vision, along with the spirited participation of teachers and staff, ensured a truly memorable day for all.

Spring Fling 2026 showcased the boundless enthusiasm of our Middle Schoolers as they eagerly marked the countdown to the end of the school year, rain or shine!
