Third graders build shelters for Kampsville

Third Graders Become Archaeologists for a Day

The Center for American Archaeology at Kampsville spent a day in September with 3rd graders, teaching them how natives lived in the United States many years ago. They showed students how to flintknap (make arrowheads with a copper tool and chert, how to weave with cattail reeds and grind corn into cornmeal. Students also built a shelter on Lilly’s Field using found objects. The program included archaeology, ecology, biology and geology and challenged students to use their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
