Costume and Prop Design Winter Term Class

Story and Photos By: Elizabeth Giokas ’29

The Costume and Prop Design Winter Term class was working on creating props for The Little Mermaid Jr. play.  This class designed and hand-made all different types of props, so the actors in the Little Mermaid play could use those props to perform. The class takes place in The Freeman Arts Building on the Middle School campus and was taught by Mrs. Vogel, a Middle School Art Teacher. “I like that we get to be independent, and we can create our own ideas. I think the goal of this class is to stretch our artistic abilities” said Kinsey Burns29. The students in this class were allowed to use many different materials and supplies from the art room.

Inside the room, I saw focused, happy faces. “I like that my creation will be presented on stage. It’s a calming end-of-the-day class where I get to be creative,” said Ruby Morris ’29. During the class, the seventh and eighth graders were on topic and tried their best to make their props amazing.

The Costume and Prop Design course included teamwork because students helped each other while working on their props. Lily Harris28 said, “In this class, I feel like you use collaboration and take in others’ ideas.”  The costume and Prop Design class demonstrated teamwork and leadership in many ways.

In conclusion, the costume and prop design winter term class is one the students enjoyed and learned many things. “I enjoy collaborating with the musical group, and  I like collaborating with everyone because they all have their own expertise,” stated Mrs. Vogel. These middle schoolers worked hard on designing and constructing their props, and were excited to see their props on stage!
