Sewing and Digital Poster Design Over Winter Term

Story and Photos by Carly Essman ’30

For these last two weeks, the middle and high school students of MICDS participated in the first-ever MICDS winter term. Students cooperating in these activities have been learning many new skills and participating in fun activities. The Sewing and Digital Poster Design class challenged students in ways that they may not be challenged during the school year.

The students in this class have been learning how to stitch and make posters advertising their creations. People taking this class have been able to learn new skills while getting to engage and talk with classmates. The students are currently learning the basic stitches like running, back, split, cross, and blanket stitch. They are just practicing the stitches, but they will have the opportunity to use them for projects, including bookmarks made of fabric with designs and hot pan holders. The digital poster will be made to help advertise and show their products made as if to sell them.

Lillian Ott ’28 said, “I like how they have step-by-step guides with a video to teach us how to stitch, and the teachers are walking around to help us.”

Elle Faerber ’28 and Victoria Noble ’28 agree about learning this new skill. They said, “Sewing class is very fun, but the process is long and very rewarding.”

Nora Reynolds ’28 learned a practical use right away. “Sewing has helped me to learn how to sew the hole in my sweatshirt,” she said.

When asked about why she wanted to teach this class, Ines Shultz, Middle School World Languages Teacher, said, “ I am hoping for them to learn these new stitches to enjoy them and do them later.”

People taking this class have been able to learn new skills while getting to engage and talk with classmates. I observed a fun tone when I went into the classroom. They had music playing, they were helping each other with stitches, and just overall having a good time. In my opinion, that’s what Winter Term is all about: having a good time and a little bit of a break before school starts again.
