Spanish Students Dive into Storytelling with Humans of St. Louis Creator

Last week, Alyoska Díaz, Upper School Spanish Teacher, invited Lindy Drew, creator of Humans of St. Louis, as a guest speaker for her Spanish 350 classes. Lindy shared her experiences as a storyteller and photographer, speaking with students entirely in Spanish. “Her visit connects directly to our current unit, ‘Cuéntame (Storytelling),’ and gave students a unique opportunity to explore what it means to be a storyteller,” explains Ms. Díaz. She also highlighted how speaking Spanish has enriched her professional career in countless ways.

“As their teacher, I saw this as a wonderful opportunity to connect our current unit with someone local who is doing meaningful work in our community,” Díaz shares. “By bringing in Lindy, I hoped to spark curiosity, inspire deeper learning, and help students see how storytelling can create a positive impact on the world around us.”
Some students found Lindy’s story, infused with her Spanish skills, to be very inspiring. “I loved hearing from Lindy because she is a great example of someone who takes chances and leads a life of service,” shared Abby Walsh ’28. “She is truly inspiring, and it was amazing to hear her story. For example, I loved hearing about her time in South America. It’s inspiring to hear about how she moved right after college. She traveled around South America and lived in various countries, doing different things such as working in a girls’ home and helping them feel more at home.”

Another student learned a lot about listening by hearing Lindy speak. “Listening to Lindy Drew taught me about the listening aspect of storytelling. There’s a lot more to it than just sharing,” said Shaurya Maru ’28. “Listening to the entire presentation in Spanish was hard because I didn’t really understand some parts of it, but it was a unique experience compared to having another guest speaker presenting in English. It was neat to see how Spanish helped Lindy kickstart her career because without it, she never would have met new people in Latin America. That was one of the [pivotal] things that sparked her interest in storytelling.”

The visit concluded with Ms. Díaz raffling off two Humans of St. Louis books.

¡Gracias por compartir su historia, Lindy! (Thank you for sharing your story, Lindy!)
