String is in the Air: Spring Concert Showcases Upper School Orchestra

The audience at Wednesday night’s concert enjoyed an impressive performance by our Upper School strings and Virtuosi musicians. The MICDS Concert Orchestra opened the evening with a selection of pieces ranging from a classical arrangement by Vivaldi to a rendition of the popular sea shanty The Wellerman. The MICDS Festival Orchestra then took the stage to play Kate Bush’s 1985 hit Running Up That Hill, repopularized in recent years by its use in the Netflix show Stranger Things.

The smooth sounds of classical music continued to float through Brauer Hall as the Upper School Orchestra played three selections, beginning their segment of the evening with a piece from Beethoven. The Virtuosi musicians closed out the evening’s program with five selections, including those by Dvorak, Mozart, and Strauss. “The students did a great job showcasing multiple musical styles in their Spring Concert,” said Ethan Forte, Middle & Upper School Music Teacher. “From a tango and sea shanty to classical concertos, the orchestra students gave their all to each piece.”

Forte recognized the challenges that the musicians faced while preparing for their concert. “Even the threat of tornadoes, causing the cancellation of the Upper School dress rehearsal, couldn’t keep them down!”
