Senior Selected as an Outstanding Student Leader of Saint Louis County

Congratulations to Shelly Bhagat ’22 for being selected as an Outstanding Student Leader of Saint Louis County, which selects one senior from each St. Louis high school on the basis of leadership, community service, and academic achievement. Bhagat was nominated for this award and said, “I really appreciate the nomination and I enjoyed getting to learn more about the issues St. Louis is facing and how to tackle them, as well as meeting like-minded people who are also interested in tackling social issues.” She attended a conference in October where she met the other Outstanding Student Leaders and worked with them to solve challenges in St. Louis. “Overall it was such a great experience and I’m grateful for the opportunity.” Way to go, Shelly!

Becoming a Gold Award Scout

Coumba Diallo ’22 is officially a Gold Award Scout! She received notification that she completed her Gold Award on March 1 for her work on youth in transition in St. Louis, Missouri (foster teens) and Saint Louis, Senegal (talibes). She created the Xale Reew Mi Project, dedicated to addressing the emotional health of older foster children and teens. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn.

Coumba collected over 150 kits (each valuing $70) for teens in foster care in Saint Louis, and raised funds to hire a teaching artist who did 10 art workshops with talibes. The third phase of the project is a virtual exhibition featuring youth artists from Senegal and Missouri. The project combined her interest in psychology and the role of creating positive mental health. She is thankful to MICDS MIST (Mental Illness Support for Teenagers) organization which helped spread the word about the project and Community School which invited her to speak about the project and also raised donations for the project.

For a full view of Coumba’s exhibit and to learn more about The Xale Reew Mi Project, please visit the Virtual Exhibit | XaleReewmi here. Amazing job, Coumba!

She spent last summer living on a boat in the Caribbean with the Broadreach Foundation, an organization that “offers 70+ global education and skill-building summer adventures in 40+ countries for middle school, high school and college students. Each program is designed to provide hands-on experiences for students out in the real world.” Bree has her PADI Certification which means she has “the most respected and sought after scuba diving credentials in the world.”

Mathletes Excel in Missouri State Mathleague Competition

James Morey ’25, Alan Li ’23, and Jack Xie ’22 competed at the Missouri State Mathleague Competition at the University of Missouri on Saturday, April 23.
