MICDS Model UN Team Earns "Outstanding Small Delegation" Award

By Kristin Roberts, MICDS Model UN Club Faculty Sponsor

The MICDS Model UN Club earned the “Outstanding Small Delegation” award at the 16th Washington University in St. Louis Model UN Symposium, WUMUNS XVI, that took place over the weekend of September 29 through October 1, 2023. This marked a significant milestone for the club, which was re-established at MICDS just a few years ago.

MICDS delegates immersed themselves in the experience, dedicating their Friday evening, the entire day on Saturday, and Sunday morning to represent various nations, both real and imaginary, from around the world and across different eras. The symposium featured a diverse range of committees, including a General Assembly of the UNHCR focused on the Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh, as well as intriguing historical and fictional committees such as the Easter Rising Committee and the Star Wars Republic Senate. Our talented MICDS delegation proudly represented Bulgaria (Tanay Goel ’24), Malaysia (Avani Reddy ’25), and Colombia (Alexa Doumit ’25) at the UNHCR, as well as Wilhuff Tarkin in the Star Wars Republic Senate (Omkaar Alakkassery ’24) and Winfred Carney in the Easter Rising committee (Baishali Biswas ’25).

Despite being less experienced with Model UN Rules of Procedure and collaborating with students from across the country, our delegation engaged in debates, leveraging their deep understanding of their assigned nations and figures, to address the pressing issues at hand. WUMUNS XVI was a transformative experience for our students, offering them the opportunity to learn and apply the intricate procedures of Model United Nations, connect with students from around the country, and achieve recognition in the form of the “Outstanding Small Delegation” Award during the Closing Ceremony.

The efforts and dedication of the MICDS Delegation are truly commendable. They embraced the challenge of a more demanding conference, invested time in thorough research and position paper development beforehand, and then committed long hours over the weekend to engage in constructive debates and collaborations. The “Outstanding Small Delegation” award is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the MICDS Model UN Club to embrace new challenges and continuously evolve. As we look ahead, the future is bright for our club. We eagerly anticipate our participation in a Model UN session hosted by Civitas-STL later this semester and eagerly await the opportunity to take part in another conference down the road. The MICDS Model UN Club is on an exciting trajectory of growth and success!
